What makes a healthy home environment?

A healthy home environment is one that promotes physical, mental, and emotional well-being for its occupants. Here are some key factors in a healthy home environment:

1. Regularly clean and vacuum your home to remove dust, mould, and other allergens that can cause respiratory problems.

There are some scientifically backed health benefits of a clean home. Conversely, letting your home get dirty and/or disorganised can negatively affect your mental and physical well-being.

Some benefits you will see for your efforts are that you will sleep better and get sick less often. Dust, allergens and bacteria live in carpets, your bedding and upholstery.

When everything is in order there is less chance of procrastinating and you can be more productive!

2. Use non-toxic, eco-friendly cleaning products to reduce exposure to harmful chemicals. and improve indoor air quality.

There are so many options for eco-friendly cleaning products on the market. Beware of green washing and do your research. Look for high quality, reusable and sustainabile products. When it comes to making a choice about a company, it is important to consider their background and policies. In particular, zero waste and carbon footprint are two key factors to consider. Zero waste is the concept of eliminating waste production, while a company's carbon footprint measures their direct and indirect emissions of carbon dioxide.

Another consideration is the impact of personal care products on the quality of your indoor air. Make your choice based on the effect it will have on you and the planet.

3. Keep your home's humidity levels between 30-50% to prevent mould growth and maintain healthy indoor air quality.

Mould spores are everywhere and very common in buildings and homes. Mould will grow in places with a lot of moisture, such as around leaks in rooves, windows, pipes, or where there has been flooding. Mould grows well on paper products, cardboard, ceiling tiles, and wood products. Mould can also grow in paints, wallpaper, insulation, carpet, fabric, and upholstery. When a surface is dusty and the humidity is high, this encourages mould spores to multiply.

4. Ensure that your home has proper ventilation to prevent the buildup of indoor pollutants and improve air quality. Open the windows often, and/or use a air purifier.

Do you know that your indoor air quality can be 5 times more toxic than outdoors? Sadly it's true!

5. Opt for natural materials like cotton, wool, and bamboo for bedding, curtains, and furniture to reduce exposure to synthetic materials and chemicals.

Formaldehyde is a chemical that is used in the production of many household items, including furniture. It is also found in some paints and glues. Formaldehyde can be released into the air from these products, and it can cause health problems if you are exposed to it for long periods of time.

6. Indoor plants not only add aesthetic value to your home but also help purify the air by removing toxins and improving oxygen levels. Depending on your household size, you may need to install an entire green wall!

7. Keep your home at a healthy temperature (around 20-22°C) to reduce the risk of respiratory problems and other health issues. Within that range, the ideal room temperature will vary according to the season, activity, the area of your home and personal taste.

8. Manage moisture in your home by fixing leaks promptly, using exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens, and not overwatering plants.

9. Reduce noise pollution by using noise-cancelling curtains or adding soft furnishings like rugs and cushions to absorb sound.

Noise pollution is a huge problem because it creates discomfort, interferes with an individual’s peace of mind, and lessens one’s quality of life. Noise can disrupt sleep and prevent one from getting adequate rest.

Methods to reduce noise pollution are carpeting, insulation in walls and ceiling, double glazed windows, and plants. Plants can create a natural sound barrier.

10. Allow natural light to enter your home by keeping windows clean and open when possible to promote a healthy sleep-wake cycle and boost mood.

The health benefits of natural light are:

When exposed to sunlight, the skin absorbs vitamin D, a critical nutrient that prevents bone loss and reduces the risk of heart disease, weight gain, and various cancers.

Wards off depression, particularly SADS (seasonal disorders).

Improves sleep.

Reduces health risks of fluroescent lighting like eye strain and migranes.

Whether you suffer from allergies or asthma, or just want to limit your exposure to unnecessary chemicals these tips will improve the health of your home and everyone who lives in it.
